Erich Auerbach’ın Mimesis: Batı Edebiyatında Gerçekliğin Tasviri adlı eseri 1942-1945 yılları arasında yazılmış olmasına rağmen 2019 yılında Türkçeye çevrilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, böylesi geç bir tarihte Türkçeye kazandırılan devasa eser; inceleme, değerlendirme ve eleştiriye tâbi tutulmuştur. Mimesis’te çizilen Avrupa edebiyatı tarihi takip edilmiş; yazar-okur ilişkisi, roman türünde bireyin ortaya çıkışı ve gelişimi, gerçeğin değişen yüzlerinin Auerbach tarafından ele alınışı tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte eserin, çeliştiği ya da örtüştüğü diğer kuramsal çalışmalarla mukayesesi yapılmış, gerçeğin ele alınış biçimindeki eksiklikler ortaya konmuştur. Öncelikle eserin adının “taklit” anlamını taşıyor olması incelenmiş ve irdelenmiş, daha sonra eserin Truman Show adındaki sinema filmi ile paralellikleri ele alınmış, hedeflenen Avrupa edebiyatı ideali üzerinde durulmuştur. Tüm bu aşamalarda Auerbach’ın, eserinin “metodu” olduğunu söylediği “figura/ figural yorum” yol gösterici olmuştur.
Erich Auerbach's Mimesis: The Description of Reality in Western Literature was translated into Turkish in 2019, despite having been written between 1942 and 1945. In this study, this monumental work, which was translated into Turkish at such a late date, was subjected to examination, evaluation and criticism. The history of European literature drawn in Mimesis was followed; the author-reader relationship, the emergence and development of the individual in the novel genre, and Auerbach's handling of the changing faces of reality were determined. In addition, the work was compared with other theoretical studies that it contradicted or overlapped with, and the deficiencies in the way reality was handled were revealed. First of all, the fact that the name of the work meant "imitation" was examined and examined, then the parallels of the work with the movie The Truman Show were discussed, and the targeted European literary ideal was emphasized. In all these stages, the "figura/ figural interpretation", which Auerbach said was the "method" of his work, was a guide.
